Favignana

Favignana is a beautiful Mediterranean island; the air is filled with perfumes, colours and traditions. It's the largest of the Egadi Islands, the others being
Levanzo, Marettimo, Formica and Maraone . It covers an area of 20 Km² and has a coastline perimeter of 33 km. About 3,500 inhabitants live in the town itself.
The island is mainly flat with just one small mountain, Monte Santa Caterina. Favignana has an incomparably beautiful land- and seascape. The sea is blue and crystal clear whilst the coast is prevalently rocky but most of the numerous, sandy beaches are easy to reach, especially the ones on the south coast.
The climate is generally mild, hot in summer. The sea offers us its bounty: red lobsters, octopus and innumerable varieties of fish. May is the month for the tuna fishing 'mattanza', an ancient and spectacular custom, bloody but at the same time fascinating. Vegetation-wise the island is fairly sparsely covered but it does offer a certain amount of typically Mediterranean undergrowth. Furthermore the existing thin rock vegetation is considered of particular interest. There are numerous, reasonably level roads that are bicycle-friendly, enabling our more energetic visitors to cycle round the whole island.
